Noemi Gonzalez Talks Selena Series, Representation, And Breaking Rules In Fashion.

Editor: Congrats on landing a significant role in Netflix's adaptation of Selena Quintanilla's life. Tell us your initial reaction and thoughts when you were announced as 'Suzette Quintanilla' ?

Noemi Gonzalez: It was one of the most profound moments of my life. I was stunned when I got the call from my reps that I had the family’s approval. That whole day I was so excited and humbled! I just celebrated with loved ones while thinking of Selena, Suzette, Abraham, and the drums. It was so much all at once and I took it all in because getting this role was so personal for me. I have always been a major Selena fan and I wanted to be part of telling her incredible story.

Without giving too much away, what can fans of the iconic biopic expect from the series, what positive differences are there?

When you have a two-part series format there’s opportunity for more of the story to be told. This series will be a deep dive for longtime Selena fans and will also offer the opportunity for a new generation of fans to discover Selena’s story and music. With the family’s blessing, the diverse creative team involved with the series has done a tremendous job bringing this story to life. I hope you love the nostalgia of the 80s and 90s, the loving vibes of familia, and all the positivity that is Selena!

Tell us more about your experience learning to play drums for the role, can you go on tour now [laughs]?

I CAN’T WAIT TO GO ON TOUR!!! No... maybe, ha! I will say I am immensely proud that I learned this very demanding instrument. There’s always room for growth, practice, and improvement, but I did come far. With that being said, I couldn’t have gotten there all by myself; with a lot of grace from God, patience of Antonio Pontarelli, our music consultant, and enthusiasm of Kiko Brenneisen, my drum instructor, I was able to rock out on the drums to Selena’s timeless music!! I learned so much about myself learning such a hard instrument. It shaped not only myself, but I applied it to shape the character of our Suzette!

Let’s get into fashion, you wrote an op-ed about beauty standards in Entertainment Weekly, how would you describe your personal style? If you could abolish one fashion faux paus what would it be?

I think my personal style is on a spectrum of classic and maximalism. I definitely experience decision fatigue, so I create a great uniform base. Then what I do is I repeat amazing minimalist looks that I switch up by pairing them with dynamic additional pieces. I love expressing myself through fashion and feeling dynamic but I let myself go with the flow of what I need on any given day. I would abolish the idea that we need to follow trends. I don’t feel the need to follow. Be unique. Be you or stick to something timeless.

Name your 2 fashion "must-haves" and why?

I love a tulle skirt and a leopard print jacket. Both items are just fun! They make you feel some type of way. They spark joy for the wearer and for the observer!

How do you keep your skin fresh and clear as it is? Any notable products you live by?

To keep my skin fresh I drink a LOT of water. Also, working out produces a natural glow that no product on the market can create. So I highly recommend natural routes for the utmost fresh beauty vibes. But if I had to choose any product, I do swear by serums. Whatever makes your skin feel nurtured and cared for when you apply it and it makes you look forward to your night time routine is most likely the absolute best product for you!

The Entertainment industry is tough, hard to break in, especially when representation could be increased. Was there anyone or any specific body of work you saw growing up that inspired or encouraged you to pursue your career? Who gave you hope as a Latinx actress?

Selena and Jennifer Lopez of course! Also Elizabeth Pena and Rosanna DeSoto, and actor Esai Morales from La Bamba. Most definitely Rita Moreno. All powerhouses as individuals and dynamic Latinx representation. Growing up, becoming an actress was not on my radar. I just know I felt valued and seen watching Selena and La Bamba over and over again. I think who gave me the most hope was and always will be Selena and Rita Moreno. Both broke barriers with embracing who they are and always giving their best.

What is something you think people would be surprised to know about you?

I speak multiple languages: English, Spanish, French and can communicate in American Sign Language!

Are there any other upcoming projects supporters should look out for outside of Selena or causes you support others can get involved in?

I was a part of The Tax Collector directed David Ayer, and it recently had an international release, so if you haven’t seen it please do! Enjoy the ride! Also Dark/Web, an Emmy-award-winning show on AmazonPrime has recently been released on Blu-ray DVD! I am so proud of this incredible show! Everyone who sees it is thoroughly effected and impressed!
